In woodworking there is always more then one way to accomplish something. For dining tables position your legs 16-20 from the end of the table to allow for seating someone on the end. You could try this out on some scrap and test for strength first.
Often tables are made with an apron around the perimeter of the legs that serves to 1 stiffen the top and 2 give the legs a better place to attach to. That way the screw will pull the top down tight. On the long-grain sides of the table allow enough room between the shoulder.
The image below shows a view from outside the table. The brackets that run accross the grain would have to have slotted holes to allow for expansion. Attaching a top to its base is a critical aspect of table design and construction.
The other option would be a sliding dovetail but usually that is screwed on one side and allowed to slide on the dovetail on the other. To attach metal legs youll need the legs Flange fittings screws a drill or wrench and the feet covers casters or plugs. Place table top on the base and screw it down from underneath with 12 6 flat head screws through the other end of the figure 8 fastener.
I would say if there is one place where wood movement will really get you is joining a wide top to a base. Rout out for them and then cover with wood on the legs just inset them on the table top. Screw figure 8 fastener to base with 12 6 flat head screws.
