How To Use A Wood Lathe Parting Tool
On a practice spindle use a parting tool to cut two grooves near its center about 38 apart and 516 deep.
How to use a wood lathe parting tool. Hold the wood lathe tools in your right hand firmly but not overly tight. Parting uses a blade-like cutting tool plunged directly into the workpiece to cut off the workpiece at a specific length. This cut is always at right angles to the axis of the lathe.
Touch the tip of the tool to the workpiece at the 1030 position when viewed from the tailstock Photo J. Then use the BP tool to round the sides of the center ring to form a bead. I got it looking nice and shiney looked pretty good.
Stand the tool on edge on the tool rest with its blade at a 90 angle to the workpiece. If using HSS parting blades grind andor hone the cutting edge to ensure its sharp. Can also be used for feathering cuts small beads and sizing cuts.
A basic wood lathe consists of a bed headstock tailstock and tool rest. I then cut the end of the blade off to square it off and I cut and ground down the teeth. Inspect the parting tool closely before using.
The parting tool has an angle of around 50 degrees. As you do this practice looking at the horizon rather than directly at the cutting edge. I shaped the end of the blade like the Sorby Parting Tool double angle look.
Next I took the blade over to the disk sander and ground it down to bare metal. The right hand should be held secure at the back end of the tool. Took it over to the 1 belt sander cleaned up the blade a little more and fine tuned the wood edges.
